Documents issued by the Romanian Consulate in the UK

This is an indicative guide to the services the Romanian Consulate provides in the UK.

Please understand that the goal of this page is purely for information purposes. We do not provide consular services; they are only provided by the Romanian Consulate at their premises.

Over the years, we have noticed that many people need a clearer understanding of the administrative procedures for transcribing civil status documents and obtaining documents directly from the Consulates. The guide below clarifies that Romanian citizens living in the UK may face the most common situations.

Although we have tried to cover as well as possible the administrative procedures for each category of application, the information presented may not be up to date, and we recommend that you check it directly on the website of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where you will find the complete procedures and updated lists of the documents required.

What is a Travel Document?

The Travel Document is a document that allows the holder to travel to Romania and enter the country only once. The Travel Document is issued by Romania's Diplomatic Missions or Consular Offices for Romanian citizens abroad and is valid for 30 days or until entry into Romania. The validity of the Travel Document cannot be extended. Therefore, if it expires, you will have to apply for a new document.

The Travel Document does not allow the holder to travel outside Romania, so you must obtain a Passport or Identity Card upon arrival in the country.

The Travel Document is issued free of charge by the Consulate and is usually processed the same day after the application is submitted.

Who can obtain a Travel Document?

In principle, a Romanian citizen who no longer has a valid travel document, either due to their expiry or due to the loss or damage of documents, can obtain a Travel Document.

Suppose you wish to obtain a Travel Document in the United Kingdom. In that case, it is necessary to go to one of the Romanian Consulates in person after making an appointment on the dedicated website. In some instances, such as urgent travel within the next 30 days, the Consular Offices may issue a Travel Document without a prior appointment. You should check the document and appointment requirements directly on the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

First Identity Card for Minor Romanian Citizens

You should know that a minor child can apply for a First Identity Card in the United Kingdom only if they present a document issued by the British Institutions ("Attendance Letter"), which certifies the reason why the child cannot travel to the country to apply for the Romanian application.

"Attendance Letter" - It is a certificate issued by the Educational Institution, which attests that the minor attends the day classes of that Institution. This document must be submitted in original, with two copies of the Translation from English into Romanian; an Approved Sworn Translator must translate it.

We can assist you with translating the first Identity Card for minor children.

The application for the issuance of the First Identity Card can only be made in person by the child accompanied by one of the parents or with their legal representative.
